Sam Amick: Don’t See Durant Leaving OKC

Kevin Durant will meet with the Warriors, Clippers, Spurs, Celtics and Heat this weekend, but ultimately, there’s a very slim chance that he actually leaves Oklahoma City.

“I’m just not seeing it,” USA Today NBA insider Sam Amick said on CBS Sports Radio’s The Doug Gottlieb Show. “Everybody you talk to continues to say the OKC return is very likely. Some people who are involved are even going farther and kind expressing some sentiment that this is all a charade that’s ultimately not going to have any substance to it. Kevin is a pretty authentic, genuine guy, and I don’t think this is a case of a guy trying to make the rounds for the sake of enjoying all the different attaboys and the recruiting process. But I do think he’s an unrestricted free agent; you only get this freedom so many times, so if nothing else, he’s going to listen, he’s probably going to learn a few things, but then ultimately I think he goes back to OKC.”

That has to make the Los Angeles Lakers unhappy. Then again, the Lakers, fresh off the worst season in franchise history, weren’t even able to get a meeting with Durant.

Will the Lakers sign anyone of note this offseason?

“Who knows?” Amick said. “Ryan Anderson, and I know that’s a far cry from Kevin Durant, is on the Lakers’ radar. I (saw reports) that Hassan Whiteside is not going to sit down with the Lakers. That surprised me. I was told today that Mike Conley is not expected to sit down with them. He’s probably only going to meet with Dallas and Memphis. So I don’t know who winds up coming their way. So far, even though free agency hasn’t started, you’re seeing more airballs for the Lakers than you did even in the years past. DeMar DeRozan is another guy who they thought they would have a crack at, and chances are he’s going to get something done with Toronto. So I don’t know who they end up getting. They need to be careful, though, because if you swing and miss on all these guys – you got $60 million in cap space and you have to spend a lot of it, but I sure would be doing short-term deals to not attach yourself to a guy for too long if you don’t love him.”
