Washington State WR Gabe Marks: Best Choice For Me To Stay

Washington State wide receiver Gabe Marks announced Sunday that he will return to Pullman for his senior season. Marks led the Cougars in receiving this year with 1,192 yards and 15 touchdowns.

“One of the main reasons (I decided to come back) is just how much I enjoy playing with my teammates and the bond that we’ve created over the last four years,” Marks told Damon Amendolara, who was filling in as host of CBS Sports Radio’s The Doug Gottlieb Show. “And also just realizing how close we are to really crossing over the hump and being one of the better teams in the country. We realized our potential this year.”

Washington State went 9-4 this season and finished third in the Pac-12 North. The Cougars lost their season-opener to Portland State, 24-17, but went 9-3 the rest of the way, with the only losses coming at then-No. 24 Cal, against then-No. 8 Stanford and at Washington. The losses to Cal and Stanford were by a combined eight points.

“We had a really good year going 9-4, but we know that we left a lot on the table,” Marks said. “There’s nothing more I’d like to do than be one of the best teams to ever play at WSU with the guys that I’ve become best friends with over the last four years.”

WSU beat Miami, 20-14, in the Hyundai Sun Bowl this past Saturday. Marks led the Cougars with five catches for 67 yards and a touchdown.

The California native spoke to head coach Mike Leach and others before making his decision.

“They all have a lot of experience with situations like this, and I obviously did my draft evaluation with the NFL,” Marks said. “So I just took the advice of my coaches and what I thought was best for me given what I got as my draft evaluation. I made the best decision for me personally and for my friends. I just decided to stay in school because I knew I could get better and bigger and faster. That was the best choice for me.”
