Chris Webber: ‘I Don’t Talk About Jalen’

In one of the more contentious interviews in CBS Sports Radio history, Chris Webber was none-too-pleased by a seemingly innocuous question posed by Doug Gottlieb on Thursday.

Webber discussed many topics during his segment on The Doug Gottlieb Show, including a class that he will teach on sports, culture and business at Wake Forest in 2016. Toward the end of the interview, Gottlieb asked Webber about his relationship with former “Fab Five” teammate Jalen Rose.

Webber and Rose, once extremely close, have been on the outs in recent years.

“What did you just ask me?” Webber said.

Gottlieb reiterated his original question: Where is your relationship with Jalen?

“Wherever it was,” Webber said.

Gottlieb asked Webber to clarify.

“I mean, Doug, we ain’t talking about that,” Webber said. “You ain’t getting that interview. I’m talking about Wake Forest. I don’t talk about him. I talked about him one time on The Dan Patrick show. That was it.”

Gottlieb tried to explain why he asked the question to begin with, but Webber cut him off.

“Come on, Doug,” Webber said, annoyed. “I just told you respectfully on your show I’m not going to talk about it. I’m talking about being a professor at Wake Forest teaching a class on culture in sports. Now do want want to beat me up because I did not answer you on your show?”

Not at all, Gottlieb said.

“I don’t want to answer the question,” Webber reiterated. “So what would you ask me after that? Because I’m going to put this in for my class as far as how did you handle the media. I’m going to show them right now: I do not want to answer that question. I respectfully ask you not to ask me that again so you can blow your numbers up for your show. I don’t want to talk about that, Doug.”

As Gottlieb explained, he didn’t invite Webber on to his show for the sole purpose of asking him a question about Rose, but he at least wanted to give Webber the ability and opportunity to comment on that situation if he wanted to.

“Thank you for the ability,” Webber said, “and I again say I don’t want to talk about it.”

Gottlieb added that if he didn’t ask a question about Rose, he wouldn’t be doing his job.

“I don’t know what it’s like to do your job, Doug,” Webber said, “so thank you for explaining that to me.”

Gottlieb thanked Webber for dropping by the show, saying once more it was not his goal to get into a back-and-forth with Webber.

“I hope the students sign up because the class is going to be way more fun than this interview,” Webber said. “It’s going to be crazy. Thank you.”
