Bobby Marks: ‘He’s Got Some Unfinished Business’

Bobby Marks spent 20 years with the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets. He began as a PR intern in 1995 and eventually worked his way up to assistant general manager before parting ways with the organization earlier this year.

Marks saw the Nets achieve great success during his tenure, including back-to-back NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003. Unfortunately, he also saw a lot of losing, particularly under John Calipari, who went 72-112 (.391) in two-plus seasons with the Nets.

Will Calipari ever coach in the NBA again?

“I think he will,” Marks told Damon Amendolara, who was filling in as host of CBS Sports Radio’s The Doug Gottlieb Show. “I don’t know when, but when he was let go in ’99, I know it still burns with him (about) what happened – and we’re talking 15, 16 years later. He’s got some (unfinished) business.”

Calipari led the Nets to a playoff appearance in 1997-98, where they were swept by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. But one year after going 43-39, the Nets struggled to a 3-17 start in 1998-99.

Calipari was fired.

Since then, however, he has since become arguably the best coach in college basketball, leading Kentucky to four of the last five Final Fours and winning a national championship in 2012.

“He’s basically accomplished everything he wanted in college,” Marks said. “When is the (right) time (to go to the NBA)? I don’t know. When will (he have) that opportunity? I don’t know. But I know that it still burns at him. It left a sour taste in his mouth what happened with the Nets back in ’99. I would say if you asked me, yes, he would be more inclined to be back in the NBA than to be in college. I just don’t know when that time is going to be.”
