According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, there could be an incriminating video of Dez Bryant in existence that is preventing the Dallas Cowboys from offering him a long-term contract.
Or there might not be. No one knows for sure.
And yet, Florio has said that “all the major insiders know about” the video and that “we’ve known about it for months.”
Okay, well then what is it? Does it exist? And if it does exist, where is it?
“I don’t know that it exists,” Florio said on record. “I know people have been trying desperately to get it. I know the Cowboys are aware of it, and because of that – and possibly other reasons – the Cowboys have been very reluctant to commit major money to (Bryant). That’s been kind of the open secret among members of the media. And again, I don’t know that it does exist. I’m telling you that’s what the talk has been.”
So, to review, Florio reported that a tape may or may not exist and that it may or may not be influencing contract negotiations with Dez Bryant.
Is this rumor – and that’s what it is, a rumor – pretty well-established among insiders?
“Yeah, yeah, for quite some time, you’ve heard it,” CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora said on CBS Sports Radio’s The Doug Gottlieb Show. “Now, it’s not something I’ve ever done anything about or would ever start the conversation about – just because I don’t know it. I don’t know anyone who I know for sure has seen it. I don’t know if it exists. I don’t know what role, if any, it’s truly playing in that negotiation. There are people out there who will tell you that the Cowboys have seen it. Again, I have no idea if any of that truly is fact.
“What I do know,” La Canfora continued, “is they’ve never put anything on the table for Dez Bryant to this point that would get them close to getting a deal with someone who is without question – based on what we know of him and based on production – an absolute top-of-the-market wide receiver. And this is a team that, in general over the years, has been very willing to reward its own and to pay top dollar when merited. But I don’t know – and would never claim to know – what role, if any, this possibly (existent) tape would play in it.”
Doug Gottlieb likes Mike Florio a lot. He likes him as a person, and he likes him as a reporter. Florio has been a guest on the show several times in the past. Gottlieb, however, wasn’t a fan of Florio discussing this rumor. In fact, Gottlieb called it “incredibly dangerous.”
“That’s not how I would roll,” La Canfora agreed, “but everybody’s got to put their head on their pillow at night, right? And be at peace with what they do. And I don’t do things necessarily the way other people would. I mean, to each their own. But now that the Cowboys have commented on it, it’s become sort of a news item, you know what I mean? It’s something that the Cowboys have now commented on, so it’s sort of on the record in that regard – and I guess to some degree that got it on the record. But yeah, I don’t roll the way some other people roll.”
